For example, the two most sought-after gemstones are two varieties of the mineral corundum: any corundum that is red is called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/thenaturalgem.com\/en\/gemstones\/ruby\/\">ruby<\/a>&#8220;, all other colors are called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/thenaturalgem.com\/en\/gemstones\/sapphire\/\">sapphire<\/a>&#8220;.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]<div class=\"tng-custom-divider\"><div class=\"tng-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thenaturalgem.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/bildschirmfoto-2020-05-12-um-11.09.04.png\"><\/div><\/div>[vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Red Beryl, Bixbite and Red Emerald<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1589879657419{margin-top: 20px !important;}&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;3\/4&#8243;][vc_column_text]The different varieties of beryl also have different names: Green beryl is known as <a href=\"https:\/\/thenaturalgem.com\/en\/gemstones\/emerald\/\">emerald<\/a>, whereas blue beryl is traded as <a href=\"https:\/\/thenaturalgem.com\/en\/gemstones\/others\/aquamarine\/\">aquamarine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The red variety of beryl was named &#8220;bixbite&#8221; in the 19th century after its discoverer Maynard Bixby. However, due to the risk of confusion with Bixbyite (also named after Bixby), the rare gemstone is now called red beryl. Initially, the gemstone was simply called &#8220;blue zoisite&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>However, because the mineral name &#8220;zoisite&#8221; sounds so much like &#8220;suicide&#8221; in English, Henry Platt of the U.S. jeweler Tiffany&#8217;s suggested marketing the stone as <a href=\"https:\/\/thenaturalgem.com\/en\/gemstones\/tanzanite\/\">tanzanite<\/a> instead.<\/p>\n<p>Platt is also responsible for the trade name of an intense green variety of grossular garnet, which was also discovered in East Africa in 1967. Mostly names of particularly well-known and valuable gemstones are used and supplemented by a designation of origin.
