Especially in times of economic uncertainty, real tangible assets are gaining increasing importance.

Recognising “real” gemstones, or rather correctly classifying a stone, is often challenging even for experts. While the trained eye of a specialist can distinguish gemstones from crude counterfeits or imitations, it can become complicated without laboratory analysis to determine treatments or origin.

Ruby and spinel are a classic example of how similar gemstones can be. Up until around 1800, it was not possible to distinguish red spinel mineralogically from ruby. This is why some of the world’s most famous “rubies” are in fact spinels. One of the most prominent examples is the “Black Prince’s Ruby” in the British Imperial Crown, which, despite its name, is not a ruby at all but a red spinel. Today, distinguishing between the two gemstones is straightforward: spinel is singly refractive, while ruby is doubly refractive.

To ensure that you are buying a natural gemstone, you should always purchase stones only with a certificate from an independent gemmological institute or laboratory. In addition to identifying the mineral group, a gemstone certificate always confirms whether the stone is natural or synthetic and also addresses treatments and origin.

Emerald was first synthesised on a commercial scale in the 1930s by Jaeger and Espig at the IG Farben gemstone factory in Germany using a flux-growth process.

Depending on the method used, the starting materials include beryllium oxide, aluminium oxide, silicon oxide, and lithium chromate (the latter for colouring), as well as in some cases fragments of natural emeralds, all of which are melted together. As the material cools, new emerald crystals form around seed crystals.

Such synthetics can be distinguished from natural emeralds primarily by residues of flux within the stone and by their overall inclusion pattern.

Natural emerald always contains water, whereas synthetics produced by the flux-growth process are completely water-free. Emeralds created by the hydrothermal process do contain water, but with properties that differ from naturally enclosed water.

This makes the distinction between “natural” and “synthetic” emerald very easy to establish in the laboratory.

The first synthetic corundum was created as early as 1877 by the French scientist Edmond Frémy. Shortly afterwards, the chemist Auguste Verneuil developed a process for producing corundum artificially on a larger scale.

With the process named after him, synthetic rubies and sapphires can be produced in almost all colours, from colourless to yellow, orange, green, blue, and red.

In addition to the Verneuil process, synthetic sapphire and ruby are also successfully produced using pulling methods and flux-growth methods. In all cases, the starting point is molten aluminium oxide, which then crystallises on so-called seed crystals. In the hydrothermal process, production also takes place under pressure.

Distinguishing synthetic corundum from natural corundum is nevertheless possible, as synthetic corundum shows curved growth lines, streaky colour zoning, gas bubbles, and inclusions of the fluxes used when viewed under the microscope.

The most important information: As an investment, almost all gemstones are suitable only as untreated, natural-colored cut stones. In addition to beauty, rarity, cut, etc., the reputation of a mineral is also important when considering it as an investment. Colored gemstones are interesting as an investment from a weight of one carat (1 ct. = 0.2 g.), diamonds from 0.5 ct. Investment gems require an internationally recognized certificate from a gemological institute. As a rule of thumb, 10 to 20% of liquid assets should be invested in gemstones, and a long investment horizon of five or more years should be considered.

The fact that diamonds come in different colors is often unknown to the layman. But at auctions, colored diamonds, also called fancy diamonds, are regularly among the most expensive stones. Pink, orange and blue diamonds fetch record prices in the millions – the most expensive gemstone ever sold is also a pink diamond, the so-called “Pink Star” (which changed hands for $71.2 billion in 2017). Colored diamonds are therefore an interesting investment from a size of 0.5 ct.

The mines in the Mogok Valley in Myanmar (formerly “Burma”) are among the world’s most famous ruby deposits. It is no coincidence that the area is also known as the “Valley of Rubies” and has a long tradition of gemstone mining: rubies and sapphires have been mined there since the Stone Age.

The rubies from the Mogok Valley are famous for their unique color: a pure red with a slight blue tinge. Pale rubies are often subsequently treated by firing to produce the coveted hue.

The most expensive pigeon blood ruby in the world is called “Sunrise Ruby”, comes from Myanmar and, in addition to its color, impresses with its exceptional purity, considerable size and excellent cut.

Montepuez is a city in the north-east of the African country that has developed into an important player in the international gemstone trade in recent years. Large-scale gemstone mining has only been taking place in Montepuez since 2009. Within a very short space of time, the deposits there have become one of the largest and most productive ruby mines in the world.

Rubies from Montepuez have a strong red color – most of them are naturally pigeon blood red. They are also characterized by their exceptional purity. Due to their quality and the fact that Mozambique has rich deposits, while the quantities found in Myanmar are decreasing, we forecast a bright future for the Montepuez mines in the world of gemstone trading.

The mines are located along the Río Minero and have been in operation for centuries. Even before the arrival of the Spanish, indigenous peoples mined emeralds in the area. Professional mining of emeralds began in Muzo in the mid-16th century and the mines quickly became an important economic center.

Sri Lanka, once known as the British colony of “Ceylon”, has been known for centuries as the “Island of Gemstones”. The island’s rich gemstone deposits, especially the famous Ceylon sapphires, make Sri Lanka one of the world’s most important sources of top-quality gemstones.

The history of gemstone mining in Sri Lanka goes back a long way. Even in ancient writings, the island is praised for its wealth of gemstones. The deposits are located in the southwest of the country and the stones are mined exclusively by secondary extraction and by hand. This traditional mining method, which uses less invasive techniques and thus minimizes the impact on the environment, as well as ensuring fair working conditions, makes the gemstone mines in Sri Lanka a pioneer in terms of ethics and sustainability. As we at The Natural Gem are committed to offering only ESG-compliant gemstones, we have an exclusive cooperation with a mine operator in Sri Lanka that is in line with these values.

Ceylon sapphires are known for their unique color: a velvety blue that ranges from soft sky blue to saturated blue tones. But sapphires of other colors – including the orange-pink padparadscha, ruby and alexandrite – are also found in the region.

The gemstone tanzanite, named after its place of discovery, is only found in the East African state of Tanzania. The gemstones are found in the Merelani Hills in the Arusha region in the north-east of the country. Today, however, the Merelani mines are largely depleted and high-quality tanzanite is only mined in a small deposit in the nearby Gilewy Hills. Tanzanites from Pakistan are nowhere near the color and purity of gemstones from Africa.

Tanzanites from Tanzania are blue, violet or brown. Deep blue tanzanites are particularly valuable, although most stones on the market today are fired to enhance their color. Tanzanite has different colors depending on the viewing angle, which is referred to as “pleochroism” in specialist circles.

Mining has a long tradition in Austria, but primarily in the extraction of ores, industrial minerals and building materials. But precious stones are also found here.

The Habachtal valley in Salzburg with its emerald deposits is particularly noteworthy. The gemstones found there are not the typical emerald green, but are usually blackish or apple green. As emeralds from the Habach Valley also contain a comparatively large number of inclusions, commercial mining is not economically viable. Today, those interested can search for emeralds and other minerals on their own in the Leckbachrinne in the Habachtal valley.

Garnets can also be found on the Nockberge mountains in Carinthia and on the Granatkogel in Tyrol, while the largest amethyst deposit in Europe can be found in Maissau in Lower Austria. In the Lavanttal valley in Carinthia and in the Dunkelsteinerwald forest in Lower Austria, resourceful collectors can discover spinels and in the Hintereggengraben ditch in Carinthia there are aquamarines and various quartz stones.

Although there is no large-scale gemstone mining in Austria, the Alpine nation is home to a variety of geological treasures that are open to collectors, enthusiasts and other interested parties.

The mineral spinel belongs to the mineral class of oxides and probably owes its name to the pointed spinel crystals – the Latin word “spina” means “thorn”. However, the name could also be derived from the ancient Greek word “spínnos”, which means “spark” or “shine”. The origin of the name is not completely clear.

For centuries, spinel was overshadowed by ruby. In the Middle Ages, all gemstones of red color were referred to as “carbuncle” or “carbuncle stones”. It was not until the beginning of the 19th century that a distinction was made between spinel, ruby and red garnet. Due to this misconception, many legendary rubies that have gone down in history are in fact not rubies at all, but spinels. The “Black Prince’s Ruby” in the British royal crown, for example, is in fact a spinel.

The gemstone can be found in many locations around the world. High-quality red spinels come primarily from Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Madagascar and East Africa. In Austria, spinel can be found in the Lölling in Carinthia, in the Dunkelsteinerwald in Lower Austria and in the Hohe Tauern.

The gemstone spinel belongs to the magnesium aluminates, is characterized by a cubic crystal structure and predominantly develops octahedral (eight-sided) crystals. The spinel structure is one of the most important structural types in mineralogy.

With a Mohs hardness of 8, spinel is comparatively hard and exhibits low cleavage. As a result, it is ideal for processing into jewelry as it is less susceptible to scratches and abrasion. Due to its hardness and high melting point, synthetic spinel is also used in the production of industrial ceramics.

Spinel has an impressive variety of colors: from black to deep blue and green, violet, bright red and pink to iridescent orange and brown. The wide range of colors is due to the presence of various trace elements.

Bright red spinels, which get their color from chrome, are the most popular. Light red or pale pink spinel is known as “Balas spinel”, dark red as “ruby spinel” and dark red specimens with a tinge of blue or violet as “almandine spinel”.

Cobalt colors the spinel blue, iron green. High concentrations of iron lead to the formation of black spinel, also known as “pleonast”. Sometimes the black spinel also has a green or brown tinge. Pleonast is often processed into jewelry. The bright pink “Jedi spinel” is currently particularly popular.

Black spinel is often used in mourning jewelry, while red specimens have been incorporated into the crown jewels of various royal houses as a symbol of dominion and power.

On a mental and spiritual level, spinel is said to have a positive influence on mood and vitality. It strengthens self-confidence, reduces stress and anxiety and gives assertiveness and stamina. On a physical level, it is said to support joints, muscles and bones, especially the spine and teeth.

Spinel is an attractive choice for expanding an existing gemstone portfolio. It is still far less expensive than ruby, but we predict that it has strong potential to catch up in the future. Pure, clear stones weighing over 10 carats are suitable for investment.

When buying a spinel, it is important to ensure that the gemstone is of the highest quality. The color should be as clear and bright as possible and not subsequently enhanced. As with all gemstones, untreated, natural-colored specimens are particularly valuable. The authenticity and quality of gemstones can be proven with a certificate from an independent gemmological laboratory.

We assume that spinel will experience a sharp rise in price over the next few years and is therefore a worthwhile investment.

Apart from the added aesthetic value of gemstones, their particular advantage lies in their high concentration of value in the smallest of spaces. Due to their compact size, gemstones are easy and discreet to store, transport and pass on. In terms of practicality, no other form of investment can compete with these sparkling jewels.

What’s more, investing in gemstones is a far-sighted decision for wealth protection in the family. It is not for nothing that gemstones have been used to store value for several thousand years and noble houses have always secured their wealth with gemstone collections. The precious stones show hardly any volatility and have experienced a continuous increase in value in the past. Unlike other assets, they have retained their value even in times of economic turbulence and military conflict. By buying gemstones, investors are therefore pursuing a forward-looking and sustainable investment policy.

However, gemstones are not only invaluable in financial terms, but also emotionally. As a bridge between the past and the future, they offer the opportunity to pass on values and traditions to future generations and symbolize family ties and stability.

It makes sense to invest in gemstones if your assets are already spread across several asset classes. In this case, gemstones are an excellent complement to equities, bonds and real estate by diversifying the investment portfolio. For the same reason, it is advisable not to buy just one stone, but to invest in several small gems of the highest quality.

When buying from a trustworthy specialist dealer, you can count on an internationally recognized certification attesting to the authenticity of the gemstones.
If gemstones are part of the estate, there are some important points to consider: For example, as already mentioned, the value of the jewels must be determined for tax law reasons.

In addition, the proper storage and care of the gemstones must be taken into account. Although the former is extremely straightforward compared to other forms of investment, the correct and safe storage of the jewels should not be ignored. We recommend storing gemstones in a scratch- and shock-proof safe, bank or safe deposit box.

Gemstones are also easy to care for: Perfumes or creams cannot harm most specimens, the only thing we advise against is contact with household chemicals. The situation is different for gemstone jewelry that is worn on the skin and exposed to environmental influences. You can obtain special jewelry cleaning baths from your jeweler that will make your treasure shine again.

Last but not least, we recommend insuring investment-grade gemstones to protect yourself in the event of loss or theft and avoid financial losses. Thanks to these precautions, you will be able to enjoy the pieces you have inherited for a long time and benefit financially as well as carry on the history and values of your family.

Rings have always been a symbol of love and eternity. When exchanging rings at a wedding, for example, the future spouses promise each other fidelity and an eternal bond. Gemstones set into rings for special occasions carry an additional message and reflect the couple’s very personal love story. For example, the diamond stands for purity and constancy and the sapphire for loyalty and sincerity. Find out in this article which gemstones you can use to enhance each chapter of your love story.

The engagement ring symbolizes the intention to tie the knot. The classic choice for this festive occasion is a solitaire – a large, individually set stone. A diamond is often used for this, which stands for the indestructibility of love due to its hardness.

There is also a large selection of colored alternatives: The red ruby, for example, is associated with passion and strength, sapphire stands for emotional depth and fidelity, emerald for hope, balance and understanding. Each gemstone is ascribed a symbolic meaning that conveys a profound message.

Ultimately, there are no limits to the imagination when it comes to designing an engagement ring. The “right” engagement ring corresponds to your personal taste in terms of design, material, setting, color, size and cut of the gemstone. Several stones are often combined with each other and jewels other than the classic diamond, ruby, emerald and sapphire are also very popular for engagement rings. For example, the sea-blue aquamarine or the colorful tourmaline.

Nowadays, wedding rings no longer have to be a simple gold band. Gemstones emphasize the uniqueness of the wedding ring and give it an additional profound dimension. In addition to the classic diamond, colored gemstones give the ring a personal touch. For example, the couple’s month or birthstones can be incorporated into the wedding ring to honor the individuality of the couple and express their personal connection in the ring design.

Compared to other forms of investment, the appeal of investing in gemstones lies in their stable performance. They show hardly any volatility and have always proven to be a safe investment in times of economic uncertainty. Unlike gold, for example, the range of fluctuation in value is much smaller. Although every form of investment involves a certain amount of risk, neither rapid increases nor significant losses in value are to be expected with gemstones.

An investment in gemstones is therefore not speculative in nature. The jewels are ideal for preserving value, and their compact size makes them very mobile, easy to store and their value density is impressive.

Of course, gemstone investments do not generate regular income like investments in shares, bonds or real estate. It takes time to achieve profits with gemstone treasures – but they are all the more certain. An investment horizon of at least 10 years is recommended for these precious tangible assets so that investors can benefit from the continuous increase in value.

In addition to the time aspect, the choice of gemstones is also decisive: only natural-colored, untreated colored gemstones of the highest quality are suitable for increasing value. Certificates from internationally recognized, independent laboratories prove whether a stone has been treated and determine its quality based on the 4 Cs. The big three – ruby, sapphire and emerald – are particularly suitable for investment.

Let’s assume that 10 years ago you bought an untreated ruby from Mozambique with a weight of 3.577 ct., very good color quality (III) and only very small inclusions (C). 10 years ago, you could have bought the ruby for €12,307 gross.

From 2013 to 2023, the value of rubies from Mozambique increased by 550% (calculated on the net price). This means that you could sell the gemstone today for around €66,666 (as a private investor, you sell at the net price without having to pay VAT) and would have made a profit of €54,359 – despite the 20% VAT you paid in 2013. As an added bonus, there is no income tax on the profit in Austria and Germany if you have owned the gemstone for more than one year. This corresponds to an annual return of 18.41% (taking into account the compound interest effect).

Value enhancement sapphire

Next up is an untreated oval-cut blue sapphire weighing 6.142 ct. The color quality of the gem is classified as “Good” (IV) and it has only very small inclusions (C). The price of the gemstone 10 years ago would have been around €13,571 (gross), net €11,309.

Since 2013, the value of sapphires has risen by around 250 %. This means you could sell the gemstone for €39,583 today. You would have made a profit of around €26,000. This corresponds to an annual return of 11.24% (including compound interest).

Emerald value enhancement

Our third stone is an emerald from Zambia. The gemstone weighs 1.477 ct, has a very good color quality (III), small inclusions (D), was cut in an octagon cut and is certified as “Minor” with regard to treatments (in this case oiling, otherwise no treatment). In 2013, you could have bought the stone for €3,875 (gross), net €3,229.

In the last 10 years, the value of emeralds has risen by 60 %. So today you could sell the gemstone for €5,167 net and make a profit of €1,292. This corresponds to an annual return of 2.92% (taking into account the compound interest effect), which would still exceed the annual inflation rate and the interest you would have earned on a fixed-term deposit or government bonds over the last 10 years. And all this with very low volatility and manageable risk.

As our exemplary calculation shows, gemstones increase in value considerably over the years – the performance is significantly better than that of gold, for example. An investment in this form of tangible asset not only secures your wealth, but also increases it. In times when interest-bearing products are not yielding any returns, gemstones are an excellent addition to an existing investment portfolio. They compensate for the negative effects of inflation and show a stable, positive performance.
